Tyvek Grade & Weight Guide
Tyvek and Tyvek-equivalent materials come in multiple weights. Lighter grades are softer and more “papery”; heavier grades are stiffer and more structured. The weight you choose determines the bag’s drape, rigidity, and perceived quality.

Lightweight / Soft Hand
The softest, most “papery” grade. Flexible, crinkles easily, excellent drape. For wallets, pouches, cosmetic bags, and soft totes. The closest to a paper-like feel. Most popular for fashion and design products.

Mid-Weight / All-Purpose
Balanced weight — soft enough to fold but stiff enough to hold shape. For totes, crossbodies, laptop sleeves, and packaging. The most versatile Tyvek grade for bags. Good print surface.

Print, Construction & Performance
Tyvek’s three key advantages — full-surface printability, ultralight weight, and water resistance — combine to create a material that outperforms paper in every functional spec while maintaining the paper aesthetic. We spec grade, print method, and construction at sampling.
The key procurement note: “Tyvek” is a DuPont brand name. We source both genuine DuPont Tyvek and Tyvek-equivalent HDPE non-woven materials from verified suppliers. Both deliver the same paper-look, tear-proof, water-resistant performance. We’ll advise which option fits your brand positioning and budget.
Print Methods
Digital print (full-color, photo-quality, short-run), offset print (high-volume, sharp), screen print (spot colors), and UV print. Full-surface, edge-to-edge printing with sharper definition than canvas or cotton due to Tyvek’s smooth HDPE surface.
Water Resistance
Inherent — HDPE fibers do not absorb water. Tyvek sheds rain and resists splashes without coating. Seams are not waterproof (stitched construction); for fully sealed products, heat-sealing or ultrasonic welding is available.
Tear Resistance
Tear-resistant in all directions. Unlike paper, Tyvek cannot be torn by hand. Puncture-resistant. Fold-resistant — survives thousands of fold cycles without cracking. This is the core “not paper” performance difference.
Sewing & Joining
Machine-sewn (standard), heat-sealed, ultrasonic welded, or tape-bonded. Tyvek sews like fabric but with lower friction — adjusted presser foot pressure recommended. Heat-sealing creates clean, waterproof seams without thread.
Washability
Hand-washable and machine-washable (cold, gentle, air dry). Maintains structural integrity and print quality through repeated washes. The crinkle texture increases with washing — which most buyers consider a positive aging effect.
Recyclability
100% recyclable in the HDPE (#2) recycling stream. Not biodegradable (it’s polyethylene). The sustainability narrative is: ultralight (low shipping carbon), ultra-durable (reusable hundreds of times), and fully recyclable at end of life.

FY Bag Custom operates its own vertically integrated factory in Guangzhou — design, sampling, Tyvek cutting, sewing or heat-sealing, full-surface printing, and QC all under one roof. Tyvek requires adjusted sewing settings (lower presser-foot pressure, HDPE-compatible thread tension) and specialized print setup — capabilities our 500+ staff handle in-house.
Our Tyvek production shares print equipment with our sublimation polyester and non-woven bag lines, and hardware sourcing with our full bag catalog.

Tyvek bags face material-specific QC risks — print adhesion on HDPE surface, heat-seal bond strength, crinkle consistency, and the need to distinguish “intentional crinkle aging” from “production damage.” Our 6-stage QC targets each one. Third-party inspections welcome.
Incoming Tyvek Inspection
Tyvek grade, weight (g/m²), and surface smoothness verified. Print test run on production-batch Tyvek for ink adhesion and color accuracy. Silver or pre-crinkled variants checked for surface consistency.
Pre-Production Sample Approval
PPS delivered in 5–7 days with final printed Tyvek and construction. Mass production starts only after your written sign-off on print quality, crinkle level, construction method, and overall feel.
Print Quality Verification
Full-surface print color accuracy, registration, and adhesion verified piece by piece on first 50 units. Edge bleed and alignment checked. Print durability scratch-tested on HDPE surface.
